A Million Creatures
Bio
A Million Creatures is the solo project of Molly Murphy, a Northern California-born, Seattle-based musician and writer. Under the name, they make music that claws at the same themes, turning their fascination with monstrous transformations, the strangeness of bodies, and the obsessive, anxious mind into dark but hopeful sounds.
Molly has been making many iterations of these songs since 2013, when they released a record called In This Hour, a lo-fi, self-produced and mixed-on-Garageband experiment about a sleepless evening. While living in Brooklyn for nine years, they performed around the city in various music collaborations. They wrote, re-wrote, and demoed WAKE until capturing it in its current fuzzy analog form in 2018 at Basement Floods Records with co-producer Lora-Faye Åshuvud, engineer Alex P. Wernquest, and multi-instrumentalist Phil Harris. The record is made from a collection of single-take performances recorded straight to tape in a studio with no computers in it— in one song, you can hear a summer rainstorm tinkering on the corrugated roof, on another, crickets and a candle wicking.
Alongside music, Molly has co-hosted DIY events in California and NYC with the dream of helping artists bring their own work to life, including art workshops, a series of intimate house shows called the Habitat Tour, and multi-disciplinary cabarets called Maude Nights. Molly also uses their love of storytelling to make brand new tales for kids as co-creator, writer, producer, and composer for the award-winning Dorktales Storytime Podcast, and as a writer for Stories Podcast. In this work and with their music, Molly is most excited to get to build the worlds of their imagination, ones they wish they had growing up.
